The Best Pokemon Games of All-Time
Choosing the best Pokemon game is akin to choosing your favorite J.R.R Tolkien book. There are just so many, it’s almost impossible to decide. An option has to be made nonetheless. I’ve scoured the internet and game shops and gathered the most noteworthy games. My decision is made solely on the opinion of the vast majority and the quality of the games. So, expect some honorable mentions and other seemingly enigmatic choices. Without any further delays, here are the best Pokemon games out there.
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver 2010
Sitting at number one on our list is the iconic Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. This is our top pick for obvious reasons. This favorite remake of the greatest Pokemon game ever ticked all the boxes with it’s improved graphics and gaming interface. Arguably the best DS game of all-time.
Instead of deviating from the original source material like a lot of game remakes tend to do, this one stayed faithful to the source material and was altered slightly by adding a little something here and there. Overall, has an incredible storyline, killer graphics, new and exciting abilities, and the return of some of our favorite perks and moves, and finally, we got to see our favorite Pokemon again.
Pokemon Platinum (DS)
This is the premium version of the beloved Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Pokemon Platinum introduced the ultimate Pokemon community that allowed gamers from all over the world to band together and play mini-games that featured rare prizes that almost always interested all those that were involved. This online community also featured a market place that allowed you to trade and use the black market. The black market allows players to trade Pokemon and other rare items.
The game featured stunning visuals for its time, and it was most definitely a massive step up from the previous generation in every way. It had better gameplay and far superior graphics. A true Nintendo DS classic.
Pokemon Black and White 2
This is the sequel of the amazing series that some argue was the best Pokemon game ever. The story starts off years after the events of the iconic black and white. It’s quite similar to the first game, but much more interactive.
Pokemon Black and White 2 holds a special place for everyone who enjoyed the first installment of the first game. The second one takes you down memory lane, and lets you explore that part of the franchise one last time before you say goodbye.
Pokemon Emerald
This is the premium version of the beloved Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Pokemon Emerald remains relatively unchanged for the story mode and gameplay. However, there is a little bit more to explore, but the story is still fundamentally unchanged. The most significant change to the original story is the part where the game allows you to catch rare Pokemon. The premium version also allows you to stumble upon Pokemon more often, meaning you can amass quite the collection without going through much trouble which is so much fun. Pokemon Emerald is by far the best Pokemon game for GBA.
Pokemon Red and Blue
Pokemon Red and Blue was the beginning of the new Pokemon franchise more or less. It introduced the formula that has shaped all recent Pokemon games since then. The game was initially launched on Gameboy, and it introduced third person playable characters, turn-based battles, hunting for wild Pokemon, multi-player trades and matches through local area networks.
Sure the game is over twenty years old and was released on Gameboy all those years ago, it’s still a treat if you don’t mind large pixels and retro graphics.
Honorable Mentions: Terrific Pokemon video games that didn’t make the list.
- Pokemon Go for mobile
- Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! for Nintendo Switch
- Pokémon: Magikarp Jump for mobile
